Hello, I’m Maarit Hirvonen, UX / Interaction Designer

I design digital services by user-centric methods, with 5+ years of experience in designing software, desktop and mobile. My education in human-computer interaction design, psychology, affective computing, and ICT business reflects my deep interest in humans, meeting real needs and solving problems.

At the moment I'm studying Master's in Psychology and I'm open to new UX work opportunities.

Experience

UX Designer at Cloudator

03/2018 - 03/2024

I designed a new payroll and worktime management system, being responsible for the UX since January 2020. My designs included desktop UI for payroll specialists, mobile application for tracking working hours and some smaller projects like websites and sales material. The payroll UI designed by me helped the company get the first business partner and users. My design process progressed from user interviews and wireframes to hi-fi prototyping, visual design, style guide, implementation support and communication about UX decisions and vision.

Service Designer at Palmu

06/2017 - 11/2017
I worked in Customer Insight team of the service design agency, conducting user interviews and producing hypothesis material to support discussion in five different projects, related to eg. healthcare and use of forest resources in service production.

Marketing Specialist at Dream Broker

05/2013 - 05/2015
I worked in Marketing and Customer Management of the video communication software company. I created video content such as software tutorials and marketing videos in which I interviewed customers in Nordic countries. I also trained software users in workshops.

Projects

Mobile app for logging worktime

2023-2024 at Cloudator

I designed the initial version of a mobile app for work time logging, enabling employees to log deviations from their regular hours, such as overtime, holidays, and absences. I started with understanding the business needs and potential users, for example that the potential customer companies had regular work hours, and the users could be employees in different age groups and with limited technical experience.

During the design process, I tested my designs with employees in different industries and age groups. User tasks included adding, changing and deleting time logs, planning holidays, providing more information about logs and checking salary based on time logs. I also created initial designs for upcoming features, including a manager's UI on mobile and desktop UI for approving time logs.

I refined component choices with developers to balance user-friendliness with implementation efficiency. I provided detailed, interactive prototypes, written documentation, and a style guide. The first version of the application was in development and ready for further user testing.

Multi-country payroll system

2018-2024 at Cloudator

During my years in Cloudator I designed many features for a multi-country payroll system: interactive dashboard for global payroll management, a to-do list-style notification center for payroll clerks, employee information pages, accumulators for payroll calculations, customisable reports, and work time management tools.

I created user personas to capture the needs of the varied user base. I designed multiple versions of each feature, and by iterative design, user testing and development, the features were redesigned and improved based on user feedback, implementation resources and business needs.

Some features were more future-oriented and technically ambitious, for example the multi-country dashboard designed for a global organisation, whereas some were suitable for a variety of customers. Since the company was looking for customers, the focus shifted over the years: new features were constantly needed and features needed to be as versatile as possible, considering multiple potential use cases without knowing the future emphasis. For example, I designed a customisable report with data selection, versatile grouping and filtering options and saving reports for future use.

Diabetes information visualisation for professionals

2017 at University College London

My Master's thesis at UCL focused on information-related challenges of type-1 diabetes professionals. An initial finding of the study was that the medical professionals had challenges with empowering patients to self-track and analyse. I worked with a London-based start-up MumoActive that provides a mobile application for type-1 diabetics, especially those who manage their condition with insulin injections.

The purpose of my research was to understand the information needs of type-1 diabetes professionals and to design ways for them to improve their work. The findings from 11 interviews with diabetologists and diabetes nurses showed that their main concern was the self-management of diabetes by their patients and their ways to encourage and support patients' own diabetes data collection and analysis. Thus, I designed and evaluated different software functions for empowering patients to get their blood sugar under control, in cooperation with clinicians. The final prototype empowers patients in three ways: 1) supporting analysis and remembering, 2) reacting in real time and 3) setting goals and tracking progress.

About Me

What lead me to UX design was probably my love for problem solving, visual aesthetics and creativity. As a child, I was drawn to subjects like math, art and writing essays. I’m curious and value learning and new experiences: for example, I've studied in four different countries and a wide range of topics from computer science and business to psychology and social sciences.

Currently, I’m studying psychology at the University of Jyväskylä. With mental health challenges on the rise, I believe that psychological insight is invaluable in any job. But most importantly, I want to understand better how people operate and why things unfold as they do, both for an individual and in society.

Besides work and studies, I enjoy spending time with family, adventures like traveling, as well as peace and quiet, yoga and meditation.

I’m open to new UX work, especially projects related to psychology, health or contributing to something socially valuable. Hope to hear from you soon!
